The Authority of Peace

Authority and power is present in actions when one allows peace to dominant their thoughts and life. Read that statement again and let it soak in. Let me rephrase the statement. When you have God’s peace ruling in your life, you can face any situation. Peace is not the absence of conflict. Peace is not the denial of difficulties. Peace is a state of mind one chooses in the middle of conflict and difficulties.

Peace of mind is a choice. Peace is faith. Peace trust God to do what He said He would do. Jesus told us He would bring us peace. Peace believes Jesus will do what He said He would do. Jesus was the perfect example of peace. In fact, Jesus is truth, life, and He is peace. Regardless of what situation He found Himself, He, still trusted His Father’s will. Jesus told us He died and rose again to bring us peace of mind. He also sent to us a comforter, a guide to show us the way to peace of mind.

Regardless of what dilemma you find yourself in today, you can still exercise your right to peace of mind in Jesus Christ and because of Jesus Christ. Many point others to peace but Jesus is peace and also has the authority to issues peace to us.

The authority in peace is the power to exercise understanding and love in the middle of a life storm. Regardless of what may come, peace brings about authority. Peace allows you to think clear and move ahead with confidence, not in self but in the power of Jesus Christ the risen Lord.

Exercise your authority today and walk in the calm serenity of Jesus. There is power, authority, and peace in trusting in Jesus to guide you through whatever situation you might be walking through. Remember there really is authority in peace.

Do You “Dither” in Your Job Search?

I looked up the definition of “to dither” before writing this article.  It is to be agitated and in a nervous state.

My definition, however, as it relates to a job seeker is that some people will spend many minutes and hours, seeking a way out of looking for a job.  It is a neighbor of procrastination.

But “dithering” also can mean, going from one activity to another.  For example:  Writing down names of people to call about jobs, but never making the calls or putting one’s attention onto other things.

All kinds of motions/actions are made to find a job.They all add up to busy work and the active tasks are left out.

How will a person stop this aimlessness and get something done on their own behalf?  Setting goals with a definite timeline to achieve them, are what job seekers HAVE to do.

“Dithering” is good for butterflies and birds, but not for job seekers.

Discover Your Path to Success - Part 3

If you have read this far, we both know you are serious about succeeding, getting the most out of life, and attaining your goals.

Now, how do you “keep the fire burning” during life’s daily struggle? It’s simple really, but will require the patience to take each task into consideration, without doing everything at once.

You will get the urge to make up for lost time. You now want to jump ahead at “light speed.” If you already read Parts One and Two of this series, you are way ahead of the pack. So many people sit around and dream, doubt, or just talk, but very few take action and then stick with it.

The next step is to get a “coach.” You are now thinking, coaches are expensive; and you are right, but you don’t have to spend much. Here’s how it works: Look for the most positive person you can find, see, or hear, around you. This person is full of positive energy, and all you have to do is listen.

You can be selective about advice, but realize that positive energy is contagious, and you will walk away from conversations with positive energy, too. On the other hand, stay away from negative talk; it is also contagious.

Are you in need of more positive energy? No problem - read articles like this, read self-improvement books, or listen to inspirational audio books, to instill positive energy within you. You can’t lose with a steady dose of positive energy to carry you through the day.

So how do you separate good information from bad? Where do you start, and what, or who, would you listen to first? In the last, and final article of this series, I promise to reveal some great resources, but for now, it’s a good idea to gain positive energy by choosing sources that you find interesting.

If I lead you to a classic self-improvement book, you might find it boring. However, if you start to read something and can’t put it down, you are getting positive energy and you are enjoying it.

Do yourself a favor, and get a self-improvement source today. You don’t have to implement all of the advice you read - just take what fits into your lifestyle.

Now, let’s look at visualization. This is an extremely powerful treasure, and all of us have the ability to visualize. Ever since the first human had a fantasy, and it came to pass, the power of visualization has built entire civilizations.

Think about what you want, close your eyes, envision it, and see that you have accomplished it. This is only an exercise, but it is an exercise toward success. Never confuse visualization with “pipe dreams.” Visualization is an exercise to cultivate positive energy, move forward, and accomplish goals.

The hidden treasures you found today are patience, the ability to learn, and visualization. Again, you already had them, but patience will require a little extra work, as it does for all of us.

Plant Spirit Shamanism- The Way of The Lover - Sufi Healing

According to Sufi legend, the Prophet Sulaymãn was the first to learn the healing properties of flowers and herbs while he was at prayer one day, and a flower sprang up and greeted him. Sulaymãn returned the greeting and asked the flower what it wanted. It replied that it was a healer. Sulaymãn noted this and, seeing his interest, other flowers grew around him and told him their healing secrets too, until he knew the cure for all diseases.

Flowers heal, it is said, because they possess dhat. This is the spirit of God and the essence of every flower that ever was, is, or can be. Shamans say the same: that every plant is all plants, so that lavender is not just a lavender, but all lavenders; and since all lavenders are not just a member of their species, but part of the entire plant kingdom, they are not just one flower either, but carry the potency and spirit of all plants.

This shamanic concept also illustrates the magical “Law of Similarity” referred to by Sir James Frazer in his book The Golden Bough, which states that “like attracts like.” Thus, the effect of a plant is not just limited to its species; if it looks like another plant of a different species, it will act in a similar way, and if it looks like a human body part or organ, that is what it will heal.

Other shamanic concepts in the story of Sulaymãn are that plants which grow locally will cure local diseases, and they will tell you what ailments they are used for if you ask them directly. The shamanic practice for doing so is called journeying. It is a form of active meditation, where you take your attention into your body and allow it to reveal itself as a form of conscious energy or spirit. You can then ask which herbs or plants it most needs in order to heal itself, and how these should be used—as a tea, the ingredient for an herbal bath, or an aromatherapy oil to be used in a burner, for example.

Having identified the herb, you can then look for it in nature or find it at a herbalist’s shop and gather a quantity for yourself.

Spend a little time with it when you do, imagining it to be a real spiritual being and entering into dialog with it so you can explore its medicinal qualities. You might then wish to look up this plant in an herbal encyclopaedia to cross-check the information you have received with the guidance provided by others who also know this plant. You may be surprised at how accurate you are. But, then again, why should this be so surprising? At some time in the distant past, before there were “scientists” and “medical procedures,” the spirit of the plant must have communicated its purpose to someone in order to be included in an encyclopaedia at all.

Two very good plants to begin with, if you wish to restore your body and build your strength, are echinacea and uña de gato (cat’s claw), both of which are powerful immune system healers. The immune system is what gives the body energy and helps it fight off and prevent disease. These plants should therefore be considered in any regime to empower the body.

In aromatherapy, oil of amber, extracted from the resin of the pine tree Picea succinfera, is also recommended as a balancer of the body’s energies, and for this reason it is known to Sufis as the King of Scents. A drop of amber applied to the third eye will be absorbed by the body and stimulate the pineal gland, which activates and harmonizes many of the body’s functions and leads to increased well-being.

Harmonizing the Emotional Self

Balanced emotions allow our souls to flower. When we are calm and tranquil, we can moderate the “heat” of our passions to achieve emotional equilibrium. We are then able to avoid the sudden traumas that cause us pain and distract us from the path, so that life’s ups and downs have less impact on us.

There are particular herbs that help with this. The shamans of the Amazon use a plant called chiric sanango, for example. As well as its physical effects of warming up the body and bringing comfort from the cold, it offers more psychological and emotional healing, also to do with hot and cold, in that it “warms up” a cold heart and “cools” a heart that is inflamed with jealousy or rage. In other words, it helps people open their hearts to love so they discover a more sensitive and compassionate part of themselves.
Chiric sanango can sometimes be found in specialist herbal shops or on the Internet, but failing that, mint can be used instead, as it is also a balancer of the body’s physical and emotional heat and promotes the flow of love. For these reasons it is associated with the planet Venus, which was named after the Roman goddess of love.

A good plant to combine with mint is lemon balm, which is famous in Arabian herbal magic for creating feelings of love and wholeness. The chronicler Pliny remarked that its powers of healing were so great that, rubbed on a sword that had inflicted a wound, it would staunch the flow of blood in an injured person without even the need for physical contact. Recent research at Northumbria University in the UK has also proven its beneficial effects in increasing feelings of calm and well-being. It is a great relaxant and a perfect aid to exercises in meditation and forgiveness.

To make a tea of these herbs, simply boil the fresh ingredients (the amounts you use can be much to your own taste, but three heaped teaspoons is about right) in a pint or so of water for a few minutes and then simmer for a further twenty, allowing the water to reduce. Add honey if you wish, then strain and drink when cool.

For a mixture that will last a little longer, add the fresh ingredients to alcohol (rum or vodka is recommended), with honey if you wish, and drink three to five teaspoonfuls a day, morning, noon, and night. These methods of preparation can also be used for the other plants in this section.

Frankincense aromatherapy oil can also be used as an aid to relaxation and for settling the emotions. It is a powerful cleanser of the energies and enhances intuition, awareness, empathy, and compassion. It was, of course, one of the gifts brought by the wise men to the infant Jesus, and it is still used today in religious ceremonies to create feelings of love and harmony among congregation members.

Another means of harmonizing the emotions is the Sufi practice of toning. The long vowel sound a, as in the word father, will travel from the throat to the heart, where its vibrations can be felt opening our loving consciousness and stimulating our powers of compassion. An alternative, better known today, is the use of the sacred sound om, for the same purpose: to bring calm and connection to others and to the divine within and without ourselves.

Plants that work on the mind to enhance our powers of skilful thought are more concerned with the development of nonrational and intuitive information than in the improvement of intellectual reasoning, since our rational and analytic faculties are often what hold us back in our spiritual development. As Rumi tells us, “nothing happens until you quit contriving with your mind.”

Intellectual prowess is symptomatic of the “trained” or conditioned mind, which has been taught to behave itself and act in a certain unthinking way. As the word “prowess” implies, there is often also a sense of unwholesome pride or arrogance associated with it, which is a game in itself. To access the greater domains of real genius within us, meanwhile, new ways of thought are necessary, unimpaired by expectations or our desire to be an intellectual, to prove ourselves, or to achieve. In fact, we don’t need to prove anything, and there is nothing we must achieve.

Plants that can free us from the shackles of intellectual thought and help develop our powers of insight, clarity, and truth include bracken, jasmine, marigold, mugwort, and poplar. These plants bring the gift of lucid dreaming, a special state of consciousness where we become aware of our dreaming selves and can direct our dreams, which may also be prophetic in nature. The boundary between sleeping and wakefulness becomes fluid, and our dreams are more colourful, richer, and potent than before.

Poplar leaves and buds were a key ingredient in the “flying ointments” of European witches, who used it for astral projection. It (or a combination of poplar and the other plants above) can also be used to make a “dreaming pillow,” which will help you to explore new levels of consciousness.

To make one of these, take small handfuls of mugwort and poplar, or some of the other herbs mentioned above, and blend them together. Sprinkle the mix with neroli, orange, or patchouli oils, and bind it together. Then place it in a cloth pouch and put it beneath your pillow. It is said that an intention for dreams based on love is best made on a waxing moon, and dreams about health and well-being are best on a waning moon. Keep a dream journal next to your bed, and as soon as you wake up, note down your dreams and reflections so these messages of your soul are not lost.

Another means of developing powers of skilful thought is to work with plants like valerian and vervain that have psycho-spiritual properties for acuity of mind and that help us to overcome negativity and inertia.

Valerian has been recorded from the sixteenth century as an aid to a restful mind and, in the two world wars, was used to combat anxiety and depression. It is still used for these purposes. It also brings relief from panic attacks and tension headaches, which often arise from an unresolved issue or stress of some kind, sometimes to do with love or the lack of it that we perceive in our lives. By relaxing the mind, the psyche is able to work on the real problem, aided by the plant itself.

One way of taking valerian (which will also aid deep and restful sleep) is by adding equal parts to passionflower leaves and hop flowers and covering them with vodka and honey for a few weeks, after which a few teaspoons of the liqueur are taken at bedtime.

Vervain, meanwhile, was well known to the Druids, who used it to protect against “evil spirits” (nowadays, we might say “inner issues” or “worries”). It will help with anxiety, paranoia, insomnia, and depression. Once again, by relaxing the conscious mind, the unconscious is allowed to work on, and release, our more deep-rooted problems and concerns.

Another plant that protects and eases the mind is garlic. Nicholas Culpepper noted these qualities and wrote of it as a “cure-all.” It has long been associated with magical uses, protection from witches, vampires, and evil spells, and Roman soldiers ate it to give themselves courage and overcome their fears before battle. There is also a tradition of placing garlic beneath the pillows of children to protect them while they sleep and defend them from nightmares.

One way to use this plant is to make garlic honey by adding two cloves of peeled garlic to a little honey and crushing them in a mortar, then adding another tablespoon of honey to the mix. This can be drunk in hot water or simply eaten, two teaspoons at a time, morning, noon, and night.

An aromatherapy oil that is good for peace of mind and the expansion of spiritual consciousness is sandalwood, which is especially recommended by Sufis “whenever serious meditation and spiritual practices are being undertaken, because it is quieting to all of the egotisms of the body, especially those relating to sexual energies,”11 which can often play on the mind.

Finally, there is a toning practice, too, which helps to develop our intuitive mental capacities. This is the use of the vowel sound i (as in regime), which causes healing vibrations at the third eye, stimulating the pineal gland, strengthening the powers of insight, and relaxing the hold of the conditioned mind.

Harmonizing the Spiritual Self

Perhaps the greatest plant allies we have for soothing the soul and bringing good fortune and harmony are marigold flowers. Aemilius Macer, as long ago as the thirteenth century, wrote that merely gazing at marigolds will draw “wicked humours out of the head,” “comfort the heart,” and make “the sight bright and clean.”

Shamans grow marigolds near the front door of their houses to absorb negativity from people who pass by. They say that the flowers turn black when this happens, but go back to their normal bright colour when this negative energy is dispersed through their roots to the earth. Marigold petals are also scattered beneath the bed, where they will ensure restful sleep and enrich the soul, aiding astral travel, during which we may commune with the infinite and learn its loving and healing secrets. They can also be added to bath water to bring calm to body and soul.

Another practice you might try is to take a bucket of water containing crushed marigold flowers and thoroughly wash the floors of your meditation room, to create a peaceful sanctuary for your soul. You can also drink marigold tea, or eat the petals fresh in salads, to enhance your spiritual powers.

Myrrh is perhaps the most potent aromatic oil to help with spiritual expansion. It is mentioned in the Qur’an for its healing properties and was one of the oils commended by God to Moses. According to Shaykh Hakim, “in ancient times it was used to convey to people a certain internal esoteric teaching, to purify their spiritual environment so that the teachings would have a proper soil in which to be planted,” and it is still used today as one of the most sacred anointing oils.

All aromatherapy oils are simple to use, and myrrh is no different. It can be massaged into the skin, used in a burner, rubbed onto bed sheets for blessings while you sleep, or a few drops can be added to your bath. It is also available in incense form as an aid to meditation.

The vowel sound u (as in you) can also be used during these meditations. This sound, according to Shaykh Hakim, is “Where our action meets and intermingles with the divine permission, the idhn,” and it will unblock (and unlock) the soul through its vibrations, allowing you to connect with the greater soul of the world.

Enhancing Mystical Powers

When our bodies, emotions, minds, and spirits are harmonious in themselves and in balance with one another, we are better able to find our way to the centre—to remember ourselves again and merge with the Beloved. And again, there are practices to help with this.

According to the twelfth-century mystic Abdul-Qadir, who founded the Qadiri Sufi order, the rose is the most magical, potent, and soul-filled of all, and “all dervishes use the rose (ward) as an emblem and symbol of the rhyming word wird (‘concentration-exercises’).”

The rose—the Mother of Scents—represents divinity itself. Tradition states that, at the beginning of the world, God created the soul of Prophecy, and that this soul gave birth to the 124,000 Prophets who have since walked the earth. So brightly did the soul of Prophecy shine that it began to perspire, and from the waters of these holy droplets grew the rose.

Every rose, therefore, is infused with divine power and carries the essence of the Prophets themselves. It is for this reason that the rose is considered the greatest ally for mystical experience, the most skilful healer, and the most accomplished teacher of the arts of love (which may be why we still give roses to our lovers today).

Rose water can be used throughout your soul’s journey to help you balance any aspect of body, mind, emotions, or spirit, but it is of particular use in helping us attain the mystical state, where the sheets are thrown back to welcome our Beloved.

To make rose water, gather a few ounces of rose petals and place them in a bowl of spring or rain water to soak for at least a day and a night, then decant the liquid into a glass container. This elixir can be used directly on the skin, in bathing water, or drunk; ingestion will absorb the blessing (baraka) of the Prophets themselves, and the knowledge of God. Fresh rose petals can also be eaten, used as an ingredient in the dreaming pillows mentioned earlier, or sprinkled onto bed sheets so you sleep among the gods.

Wisdom of the Tarot-Disasters!

In a life of ups and downs trouble and strife is inevitable. What do you do when disaster strikes? Do you put your head in the sand and pretend it’s not happening? Do you turn to drink or drugs to get you through? Do you take it out on others or yourself?

We don’t get many or any lessons at school or from our parents about dealing with the bad things. Our parents don’t want to think of us ever having trouble and our schools don’t think it’s their business. So what happens when trouble comes?

The Tower is the tarot card of real trouble. Something has happened which means life will never be the same. The card itself shows two people flung from the top of a tower by a bolt of lightning. It illustrates that when the lightning hits you will never be the same. There are obvious disadvantages to this but there are also advantages. When the Tower card is influencing you, you can see clearly. All your illusions are blown away. You see the truth, no matter how bad that might be.

The Page of Swords gives you an idea of what to do with this new knowledge: communicate! At such times of stress often we try to be strong and silent. Often it would benefit us more if we weren’t! Talking about your feelings enables you to work through things quicker and it also allows those who love us to help, as they want to.

The Hanged Man illustrates a great concept in tarot: the benefit of another perspective. Putting yourself in another person’s shoes, even if they are your enemy, can enhance your own knowledge immeasurably. Why would someone treat you badly? Imagine things from their perspective and find out.

Communication and adopting another perspective are ways in which we can learn to see the truth. Once that truth is clear then we can start to plan for the future and rebuild. In this way trouble once it comes can be a great enabler, helping you to move forward into a better future. My own philosophy is to try to learn something from everything; good or bad. My hope is that you, when the lightning strikes, find a way to get through and come out better than before.

Born To Be Extra-Ordinary: Bringing Dreams To Life

Ever wonder why achieving personal desires and dreams can be so difficult? Dreams are all about self. Sure, other people may support us in our efforts, other people may be excited for us. But when it comes right down to it, we are the only ones who have to stick with ourselves during the entire time it takes to bring a dream into reality. It is up to us to remain steadfast in our decision that what we want is important to us. We decide to take a risk and there are no guarantees of our success. We must decide, time and time again, what we want to create is important.

Through the hardships and failed attempts, through countless times when things get complicated and overwhelming, we are the ones who must decide to find focus, passion and energy once more. Only we can find our way through the endless succession of inner doubts and exceedingly elaborate, but oh-so-legitimate sounding, excuses. We are the ones who must rise early, stay up late or quit a job to devote time to our creative process. No one will ever know just how much effort was given to find center and courage day after day. No one will understand just how much we gave of ourselves to create the dream.

Why bother? Wouldn’t it be easier to avoid the doubt and effort required to expand life? Wouldn’t it be easier to stay inside the relative safety of our inner comfort circle? Henri Bergson (French philosopher, 1859-1941) wrote, “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly.” Dreams have more to do with who we become during the process then what we achieve at the end. Following the passion and joy of manifesting dreams leads us into evolution; allows us to become more then who we were before. More open, loving, confident, peaceful, powerful and joy filled. More comfortable in our own body.

Actualizing Personal Potential

A dream must be expressed, but not so other people will offer money or love or validation. The success, money or love which may come afterward are awesome, icing on the cake, but they aren’t the primary soul motivation. The purpose is to discover how capable we are of expanding life and joy, how awesome it feels to know the power and energy of creation, and how free we are to express and expand our spirit. The outcome of dreams is secondary to the process. Pushing ourselves toward a goal does nothing to enhance joy, life energy, love and spirit. Imagination and the excited effort of the realization of the dream set us free.

With trust and love of self we determine to become pregnant with a dream, to nurture it and carry it to term, and eventually give birth. We do so, not for reasons of rebellion, anger against others or to even to prove ourselves. Not so others will pat us on the back and offer accolades. Even the creation we birth owes us nothing. It has no responsibility to give wealth, fame, fortune or happiness backs to us. We dream and create because this is how mind, body and spirit come together as one. This is how we feel good, how we are enlivened, how we fill ourselves with joy.

We are individuals come to earth to bring unique expressions to life. People often say, “But I have nothing unique to say, write, paint or express.” Perhaps it is true that most things have already been expressed in one form or another. It is also true no one has ever expressed them in the way you could. Henri Matisse, often regarded as the most important French painter of the 20th century, wrote, “There is nothing more difficult for a truly creative painter than to paint a rose, because before he can do so he has first to forget all the roses that were ever painted.”

Any dream requires effort and giving up something else. A dream is like a seed. For the seed to grow it takes a certain amount of energy. If energy is dispersed in a thousand different directions, there isn’t going to be enough left to nourish the seed. It takes internal commitment to have what is wanted. No, we don’t know ahead of time how it’s going to turn out. Perhaps we will succeed and perhaps we will meet with failure. We don’t know if the dream we wish to create will be supported by others, or if it will bring fame or fortune. Yet the process of awakening our dreams allows life energy to rise and passion to flow. Dreams are our great adventures into the unknown. There are no “should’s” or “have to’s.” This is our chosen destination, and most likely the journey of this adventure will be a challenge.

Personal Responsibility

Each person has a responsibility to expand their spirit and to continue creating themselves. Responsibility is not an ugly word. It is not heavy and does not imply any oppressive quality. The responsibility to ourselves is all about love and lightness, all about filling our physical body with life energy and divine energy and giving birth to our dreams. Yes, action is necessary. If we want to paint a masterpiece, we are going to have to pick up the paint brushes and spend the hours paining. If we want to write a book, we are the ones who must decide to allot countless days, months or years to the process of actually writing. But with excitement, the action is fueled by the infinite, limitless power of love.

Before committing to a dream, before taking the first action step, ask the following questions: “For what purpose am I attempting to achieve this desire? What will having this bring to my life?” Go deeper than the obvious answers. Look into the depths of your inner self and search for the true meaning of this journey. What strengths will be uncovered by overcoming this particular challenge? What lies do you currently believe about yourself that facing the challenges of manifesting a dream will erase forever? George Herbert (1593-1632, British Metaphysical Poet) wrote, “Without danger you cannot get beyond danger.” What is your soul’s purpose of getting beyond this danger? When you have an important event to attend there are 7 great ways to make sure you perform at your very best. These tips are relevant for social events and business meetings. Discover how to communicate with confidence while making great conversation.

1. Decide what you want to say before the event. Review it in your mind to make sure it sounds okay. Keep rehearsing it until you can say it with conviction and confidence.

2. Consider your potential listeners. Who will you be talking to and which topics of conversation will be welcome? You need to make sure your message matches your audience.

3. Be yourself. The worst mistake is to pretend you are something you are not. People will see through you and distrust everything you say. Even if you communicate clearly and with confidence.

4. Never expect things to work out perfectly. Be ready to deal with problems by deciding in advance what you will do. What will you do if people ignore your input? Now is the time to decide and not later on in the heat of the moment.

5. Be flexible in your approach. Different people need to be treated differently. Pay very close attention to how people respond to what you say and keep adjusting your approach until you have a good rapport with your listener.

6. Make the other person the focus of your attention and let him lead the conversation in the early stages. Let that person steer the conversation onto topics that are of interest to him.

Dale Carnegie, author of the legendary ‘Win Friends and Influence People,’ talks about the POWER YOU’LL RECEIVE by GIVING a genuine compliment.

I remember well a meeting I attended in London long ago. It was an association of businesswomen, and the guest speaker Barbara, had a suggestion for ridding ourselves of stress. “Anytime you feel like you need a mental boost,” she said, “Glance up and give the person nearest you a quick compliment. If no one is near you, then call someone and give them a compliment.” She went on to challenge us to try it, promising that our own stress would immediately lift in the process.

‘Too good to be true,’ was my initial inner response! How could a simple compliment do such wonders? She went on to let us practice it. And she emphasized that we can even do this with strangers – we need not have to know the person. So as the practice session ensued, we complimented the stranger next to us for her jewelry or her friendly mannerism, or for just being there. Because I worked in a male world, I exercised my opportunity with my male colleagues that week by complimenting their ties, or for the excellent job they did on their reports. Barbara was right, the simple act of giving a compliment changed the dynamics of the inner mindset to be MUCH more positive. No shrink, no medication, rather the inner resource to make an instantaneous difference.

I’ve always had the mindset that life is short and so when ever I pick up a tip for making life better – ESPECIALLY AN EASY TIP, I incorporate it in my life. I began to practice this wherever I could, keeping in mind the principle that a compliment must be genuine, from Dale Carnegie.

One evening I was in Melbourne Australia , delivering a speech at the launch of my book, ‘In Pursuit of Profit.’ I always look out into the faces of the audience when I give speeches and try to connect as I speak. After my speech, a woman came up to me to say how much she enjoyed it. “Oh,” I said. “I noticed your great interest – and by the way, you look so good in that red jacket!” And that was the end of it.

At least until eight or nine months later. I was back in Melbourne again, walking down the street, when I suddenly had a tap on the shoulder. “Aren’t you Christine Harvey?” the person asked. “You probably don’t remember, but I was in your audience some months ago and you complimented me on my red jacket. What you didn’t know at that time was that I was going through a very depressed period of my life. BUT every morning after that when I woke up and I went to my closet, I saw that red jacket and said, ”Christine Harvey said I look good in this red jacket, and it pulled me through the day.” Even now when I tell the story, it sends vibrations down my backbone. The second it took me to give a sincere compliment, and the impact it had a person’s life, and through her, the lives of others.

Ten Steps to Effective Community Leadership

How many times have you heard people at neighborhood bars, restaurants, or ball games complain about their community? How many times have you been a part of those moan-and-groan sessions?

Stop complaining and start making a difference. As the saying goes, if you’re not part of the solution, you’re part of the problem. Don’t be a grumbler. Be a leader. Here are ten steps you should master on your way to being a respected and effective leader in YOUR community:

1. Make sure you are first a good citizen.

The key to good citizenship is loyalty. Do you respect the institutions of your community and country? In other words, do you just “mouth” the Pledge of Allegiance or do you live it? Does your life reflect that of a respectful, law-abiding, tax-paying, constructive citizen? Are you the kind of citizen that adds to society or takes away from it? In any organization, a good leader must first be a good example. It is no different with your nation, state, or municipality. So, obey the law, maintain a good attitude, register to vote, and be an example.

2. Know who your elected officials are – at each level of government.

Call your local Registrar and verify the political districts of your residence along with the elected official that serves each of those districts. For example, each state has two U.S. senators and a governor. Get their names, office numbers, and addresses. Find out what U.S. House of Representatives or congressional district do you live in? Get the district number and then the name and contact information for your U.S. Representative. Repeat this process for the state legislative districts you live in - you should have a state-level senator and a state-level representative or delegate. Then, go to your city or county level and finally, if you live in one, your town. Once you know your elected officials, the levels in which they serve (national, state, or local) and their contact information, you’re ready to start contacting them - and influencing them.

3. Stay informed on the issues

Get to know the issues that your elected officials at their respective levels of government are facing. That means you must follow the news. In this Information Age, there is no excuse for being ignorant. For federal-level issues, you can listen to the radio during your commute to and from work, watch TV at night, read one of the major dailies each morning or at lunch, or read through any number of news websites. For state and local matters, you have your local papers, local radio stations, and plenty of information accessible over the Internet. Don’t be an ignorant voter that’s easily manipulated by bumper stickers and sound bytes. Be informed.

4. Stay in touch with your elected officials on the issues

Write your officials, not just with complaints or requests. But compliment them when they vote the way you think they should. Look for opportunities to speak at public hearings. It’s easy to get a chance to address your local School Board or county Board of Supervisors or Commissioners. It’s easier than you think to do the same at the state level.

5. Periodically read the Declaration of Independence (especially the first paragraphs) along with other writings that inspire you and fuel your philosophy on life.

You should always remember why you believe in what you believe. As a citizen of the United States, you should know why we have a country to begin with. Read the document that started it all - the Declaration of Independence. Get in touch with how sacred the Founding Fathers considered the idea of popular consent and self-government. In addition, read books on faith and philosophy - things that help explain the world we’re in. If you’re a Christian, read the Bible daily. Always get to the foundation of what you believe and why. That will fuel your passion and make your a leader of purpose and conviction.

6. Master the framework of your government.

As the old saying goes, the “devil is in the details.” When Lyndon Johnson first came to Congress, he became an effective leader very quickly, because he, among other things, mastered the intricacies of congressional rules and procedures. To be an effective leader, you must know the lay of the land better than your followers. For starters, this means understanding the nature of your government. That means, among other things, reading and studying the Constitution of the United States, which lays out the three-branch system of government we have at every level of our society. Then, study the laws of your state and locality. Go over the rules of your community group, homeowners association, and so forth. Learn parliamentary procedure. Be knowledgeable. As James Madison said, “Knowledge will forever govern ignorance.”

7. Stick your neck out

Ultimately, a leader must lead. Once you’ve set a good example, learned who your officials are, opened a basic relationship with them as an informed constituent, and mastered both your belief system and the framework within which you’re operating, it’s time to get out there - and lead. By doing so, you will be the kind of leader everyone respects and many will follow. And you will look back on your successes later in life, knowing that you did your part.

Can riches buy happiness? Wealth can buy many luxuries, but not happiness. Money cannot buy contentment. Money can surely buy us time with a psychiatrist with who we can talk about our unhappiness, but no amount of money can buy us happiness. Sometimes more money, and status can rob us of happiness. Think of many very rich people. They cannot move around like ordinary citizens. They will be immediately stared at. They have lost a lot of freedom in quest of money and fame.

What gets us happiness? We get happiness by doing what we like. We don’t get happiness by forcing us to do what we don’t want to do. Our happiness comes from our satisfaction of doing our heart felt desires. Our contentment comes from that. Money can destroy friendships, and break family relations. The more money you have, the more people expect from you. If you refuse, your relationship goes downhill. Sometimes I wonder if we have more than our minimum requirement of money, will we be happy at all?

If you have a giving nature, money can buy you happiness of a different kind. When you visit an orphanage, and are able to donate as much as they want to feed the small kids, you will feel a sense of genuine happiness. Money can make you do good things in life that make others happy. When you make others happy, you become happy.

Money can help you do that. No expensive dinner can make you feel as happy as the smile on the face of parents to whom you have given money for their children’s medicine.
