Hypnosis - How It Helps You Increase Your Focus and Concentration

Friday, September 30th, 2005

A lot of people often find that their minds are filled with a lot of unwanted thoughts and clutter. Hypnosis helps you to organize your thoughts and helps you to clear out the clutter. Now days a lot of people are diagnosed with Adult Attention Deficient Disorder. They are asked to try out different mediations to get their focus back. If you feel that you can’t make a decision easily or are constantly jumping from one task to another without completing either, then hypnosis can help to make your concentration and focus stronger without the use of drugs.

We need to concentrate in almost every thing we do and some tasks need more concentration than the others. For example driving a vehicle, performing a surgery, writing an exam, preparing and making a presentation all require a lot of concentration. Often we find it difficult to concentrate on a given task because there is so much on our minds – did I turn off the Iron, did I make pay the credit card bills etc. Some times there are so many things going on in our minds that it’s almost impossible to be able to concentrate on one task.

Hypnosis helps to create better concentration and focus. Hypnosis can be divided into two main areas. First, you need to learn how to really relax — to allow all your thoughts to be put aside and no one conscious thought to take center stage over another. This is why hypnosis is usually done just before drifting off to sleep at night, when you can put aside other distractions. Secondly, once relaxed, hypnosis can rearrange and organize your thoughts so that logical action can take place.

Attitude Control: Your Key to Success

Friday, September 30th, 2005

Managers, CEOs, Purchasers, Sales Reps, and Customer Service personnel are expected — even under the most difficult of circumstances — to maintain a professional, positive attitude. This ultimate desired state of mind; however, can be difficult to achieve when your supplier fails to meet a deadline, when a strike keeps you from arriving on time for a meeting, or when venture capitalists withdraw their interest as the stock market turns bearish. Many forget about maintaining control of their attitude at such times. You’re more likely to hear, “Why do I always have to do everything myself? Why can’t other people just do their jobs? Am I who has to show up on time? I give up.”

***Coaching Reminder*** The quality of your life is determined by the quality of your questions. In addition, your attitude is directly affected by the quality of the questions you consistently ask yourself.
Whether you’re closing a sale, completing a report, or making a presentation, losing control of your attitude can divert you from achieving your objective and can damage the health of your business. On a recent trip to Laguna Beach for rest and relaxation purposes, the stress of having automobile challenges compounded by a negative personal interaction reminded me of the usual challenges people face every day doing business. I had to work hard to avoid slipping into a negative attitude.

Repeatedly, I found myself thinking of the advice I give to my clients: “Remember, the real pros consistently perform at their peak, not because they’re always in control their circumstances, but because they’re in control of their attitude.” Consistently remaining committed to maintaining a Level 10 Positive Mental Attitude is key to your success. It will also pave the way for things to go more smoothly with you. I am certain my car was fixed within three hours, at a “foreign” dealership, because I “Showed Up” with a smile on my face and as much graciousness as I could muster at 8 a.m. on a Saturday morning, with my 4-year-old in tow.

Attitude control involves the practice and application of three peak performance skills.

1. Effective Self-Coaching

When Michael Jordan quit basketball to fulfill his father’s wish that he play baseball, reporters asked him: “How can you quit basketball after being voted the most valuable player? What if you fail at baseball?”

Michael Jordan, a master at playing in “The Zone,” where nothing distracts him from giving his best performance, said: “I’m strong enough as a person to face failure and move on. If I fail I won’t feel bad. I can accept failure. What I will not accept from myself is not trying.”

In that one statement Michael Jordan tells us that — regardless of the odds and regardless of the outcome — he will be there for himself, on his side all the way through the game. Effective Self-Coaching means that we offer ourselves safety rather than threats, criticism and worry. Like Michael Jordan we need to be strong enough as a person to be an effective coach in our lives — keeping ourselves focused on core principles, helping recover from setbacks, and making ourselves feel safe enough to take the risks that make us champions in our field.

Effective Self-Coaching includes supporting and motivating yourself on a consistent basis. Be sure to keep quotes and/or pictures that inspire you in your office. As a peak performer in your field, having triggers around you to keep your attitude on track can make a huge difference … and keep the trajectory of your life moving in the right direction.

2. Shifting to a Leadership Perspective

The gremlins inside our heads complain and whine, distracting us from doing our personal best.

Identify the specific words and feelings of these gremlins and be ready with alternatives that shift your attention to effective, goal-oriented actions. Use your usual or “default” reactions to stress and setbacks to wake-up the leadership role and perspective in
you. From this perspective and role — of leader, CEO, executive, coach or project manager — we are can take charge of our attitude and our life.

Ellen, one of my executive coaching clients and the CEO of a technical editing firm in Silicon Valley, used this technique to double her income in 3 months. She says: “I used to work with my nose to the grindstone, faxing at 3 AM, totally out of touch with my commitments to my health and my family. Now, I’m doing the work that relates to the bottom line and I’m done before 7 p.m. I’m working from a project manager’s perspective where I see the big picture, focus on getting results, and maintain my commitment to my personal life.”

Personal leadership means taking responsibility for your life and how you want it to flow, to look, to be. I’ll stress again what I have said many times before, “Its your life. Take control and make it the way you want it to be!”

3. Choosing to Show Up

When we’re in charge of our attitude we don’t use the victim’s inner dialogue: “I have to show up but I don’t want to.” Instead we speak about “choosing to show up to do our best.” Choice is an executive function that involves considering the risks, consequences, and one’s commitments before deciding how to act. Choice is an act that ends ambivalence and procrastination and calls for a united team effort to achieve an objective. It automatically puts you in a leadership role and perspective.

Keep in mind the speed of the leader is the speed of the pack. Your attitude, as the leader, determines the attitude of anyone and everyone around you. I love the answering machine message of one of my favorite people, her message ends: “Is your attitude worth catching? If so, leave me a message. If not, call me back when it is!” I recently heard something interesting – an army of sheep led by a lion will defeat an army of lions led by a sheep every time. Who you are being, how you Choose to Show Up, determines your success, your stress level, who you have and don’t have in your life … and ultimately your bottom line.

When the computers crash (again), when there’s another delay in production, or when loss or illness disrupts your personal life, you’re still expected to carry on. To consistently deliver as a true professional — regardless of the setting and circumstances — you’ll need something more powerful than the old “grin and bear it” technique. You’ll need to support yourself with the safety of Effective Self-Coaching, rapidly shift to a Leadership Role and perspective, and Choose to Show Up to demonstrate that you truly are a peak performer. When you use these skills you’ll be in control of your attitude. The results, I am positive, will delight you.

Five Steps to a More Positive You

Friday, September 30th, 2005

Do you want to feel great about yourself? Would you like to see all that you wish for come to fruition? Do you want to find the right balance? There’s a secret weapon that will make it all happen-and it’s You. The way you think about yourself will be your true ally in living an inspired and balanced life. Your ability to think positively and believe in yourself will form the cornerstone of your success. Here are five strategies to help you become your own champion.

1. Appreciate you
One way to develop a strong sense of self-contentment is to give yourself the gift of self-appreciation. Offer yourself the same respect and kindness you give to those you care deeply about. Treat yourself to favorite pastimes - great music, happy people, laughter.

2. Watch for negative self-talk
I’ve noticed that women, in particular, have a tendency to pick out, and pick on, the parts of themselves they like least. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard women speak disparagingly about themselves: At the gym, a woman complains that she has a “jiggle butt.” At a fundraiser for my son’s school one woman tells
another, “I am such a bad mom. I bought a cake for the cake walk (a fundraising initiative) instead of making it myself.”

Whether said as a joke or not, these self-deprecating words can be damaging when the negativity stems from a deeper sense of dissatisfaction with oneself. Oftentimes negative comments tossed off in jest can come from a much more disapproving inner dialogue than might be revealed at the gym or the school.

You may immediately relate to these examples and recognize this kind of behavior as your own, or you might not even know that you have negative conversations with yourself. Take the mirror test to find out: The next time you see your reflection in a mirror, notice whether or not your first thought is a complimentary or a critical one. If it’s critical (and for many of us it will be), it’s time to stop running yourself down. Focus, instead, on what you like about yourself.

3. Focus on your attributes
Being happy in your own skin means getting comfortable with who you are, the way you look and what you want out of life. Instead of focusing on what you don’t like about yourself, do your best to honor and appreciate what makes you unique. Your smile. Your sense of humor. Do you have wonderful hair or fabulous cheekbones? Now go further. What qualities define you as a person?
What do you absolutely love about yourself? Is it your attitude? Resist the temptation to criticize yourself. This is a learned behavior and it can be unlearned with intentional action.

4. Don’t apologize for your achievements
We have all achieved things in our lives, both big and small, personally and professionally. Often, though, negative self-talk will stop us from basking in the glow of our successes. You might find yourself saying, “Hey, that wasn’t so great” or “I could have done it better” or “I didn’t really deserve that.” You have the power to shut down this negative self-talk by honoring and celebrating your achievements. When you give yourself permission to feel positive about your accomplishments and refuse to listen to that negative inner dialogue, you will feel pleased. Proudly share your wins, rather than apologize for them. You might even amaze yourself when triumphal words such as “I’m great at my job,” “I am the best mother ever” or “I rock” roll off your tongue with hardly a thought. Watch how your confidence builds as you praise your wins.

5. Do the best you can
Your best is going to be different from situation to situation. It will change depending on how rested you feel, who is involved and where you might be. No matter what the circumstances, the most you can ask from yourself is to do your best… and then remember to acknowledge that what you’ve done is just that. Through this self-acknowledgment that you can be released from angst and regret, and possibly see the humorous side of things. This one action will contribute greatly to your sense of well-being.

The Blessing Game: On The Road

Friday, September 30th, 2005

Have you ever been in a position when you want to pass someone on the road and the person doesn’t budge? You get angry and aggravated and soon you will start saying bad names and then your driving gets worse because of the stress and on and on?

This is the best time to play the Blessing Game. This is how I do it:

Before I leave my house, I bless everyone that I will encounter, especially the ones on the road with me. Now, when I am driving, I bless anyone who is on the faster lane and refuses to make way (Californians are notorious for this—they can’t grasp the concept that the fast lane is for those who go fast, regardless of the fact that they may be disobeying the speed limit, which, by the way, I never do).

Soon enough, if the person accepts your blessing, he or she will go to the right and let me pass. If they don’t accept my blessings, the universe will open a way for me to pass through the right. Rarely is the time when I have to wait for more than a minute to pass the person in front of me, one way or another.

Of course, you may still be mad when you send the blessings, but wouldn’t you rather say: “blessings, you jerk,” than only: “get away, you idiot?” If nothing else, you will feel better, and that is what it counts. Sooner you will learn to disengage your anger and just plain bless the person.

Before I forget, you can also bless every poor soul whose car is broken along the way. I am sure they will appreciate that. I go like this: when I see a distressed car on the road, I bless the person who owns the car and his or her entire family. That feels extra good!

9 Day Wonders

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

When I was a child my father often laughed and told me I experienced “9 Day wonders”. He was referring to the fact that I often became fascinated, totally engrossed in something then suddenly lost interest in it….for a week I would be obsessed with model planes, then I was fascinated by nature and kept a nature diary…then I wanted to build a go kart.

Recognize the same rapidly changing point of focus in your self or your children?

Perhaps not surprisingly I have carried the habit into my adult life! Before becoming interested in personal development and training I wondered how to overcome this habit.

Then it dawned on me, don’t overcome it use the situation to my advantage. Let me explain. It seems most people have what I will call an “interest window”. Something will be of interest for a period of time before becoming boring.

We are often advised to set goals, how to set goals is the subject of another article, but having established goals it would be nice if we moved towards achieving them!

If you know your own maximum “interest window” you can split the achievement of goals into a series of “mini goals” or steps each one taking no longer than your “interest window”.

For example if you have set a goal of passing a degree in two years time your mind will become overwhelmed by the idea of a concerted sustained effort for TWO years!

Split the goal into steps…..read and assimilate information in one book on the subject in a period of nine days. Leave the process for a few days to allow your mind to process the information then set another mini goal!

My father was right – I do have 9 day wonders! What’s your time frame?

Why Self Esteem Matters

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

A number of years ago I worked for one of the UK’s top IT companies — a global player. We were meeting to discuss a major bid, and the room was filled with people who didn’t meet often — the most senior managers from a number of divisions. There were very few middle tier managers in the room, almost exclusively senior managers who were accustomed to being ‘top dog’. The atmosphere in that room was almost tangible. I wanted to bottle the air and analyse it later — I had never experienced such naked power, and it dawned on me in that moment that we are almost blind to the status signals we transmit.

That meeting was an epiphany, and led to me becoming a hypnotherapist with a particular interest in researching confidence and self esteem. Because what I discovered in that company, and in many companies I have assisted subsequently, was the startling fact that an individual’s self-esteem is a reliable indicator of how far they will progress in the organisation. Some technical geniuses can buck the trend, but they are very rare. For most of us, our ability to influence decision-making is precisely limited by our self esteem.

Why does this matter? It matters because the person with the greatest self esteem is not necessarily the right person to be making the key decisions. We have all suffered foolish bosses. Perhaps we have all wondered how on earth they reached such positions of seniority, given their obvious shortcomings. If you will excuse the bluntness: that incompetent boss is there because you haven’t yet been sufficiently convincing. Your performance is perhaps the least important aspect on which you will be judged; what matters is your status in the group.

Status is a fascinating topic. We communicate our status constantly, primarily through body language and voice tone. This communication is unconscious; it is felt rather than known or consciously controlled. The way in which you behave reflects your self perception of status. This is either accepted or challenged by the people around you. A dominant person (relative to you) will cause you to back off from a challenge. A submissive person (again, relative to your own status) will make it easy for you to project your will. For a fuller discussion of this topic, please visit confidenceclub.net/content/statusconfidence.php confidenceclub.net/content/statusconfidence.php.

And so we come to the nub. We should all seek to develop our self esteem, not because of the personal benefits which will flow from this personal growth — career enhancement, improved love life etc — but because we have a duty to ourselves and our communities. Until and unless we step up to the plate, our communities will remain vulnerable to an almost random process of leader selection. So ask yourself: ‘Am I allowing less talented people to make decisions on my behalf?’ If the answer is ‘yes’, then perhaps you should consider stepping up to the plate yourself. The first step in this process is building up your own self confidence and self esteem. Don’t be bashful; there’s nothing selfish about developing your own qualities. A community with a rich selection of potential leaders is, in my view, a secure community.

Can Bad Habits Actually Make You Wealthy

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

You can compare repetitious habits with the groves on a phonograph record that have recorded your habits with the needle of your subconscious mind playing them over and over. You can change your bad habits or get rid of them because they are your own thoughts being repeated by you. You brought them into existence and you can destroy them and smash them to smithereens with your will power.

In our fast paced society, the “I want it now or my money back” attitude has obsessed the consumer. Humanity nowadays reads no more than ten pages of a book mostly because they do not want to go through the necessary steps required to improve. That is plain laziness in our high speed society.

Habits shape your future success. When you make a habit you are burning a groove like on a recordable CD in the computer of your subconscious mind. Your conscious mind believes a repetitive thought is a habit that it cannot remove or get away from. If you keep repeating the same action over and over it gives power to that new habit and it will burn a habit groove in your subconscious mind. The computer of the mind will play those CD’S of habits time after time just like if you are pressing the repeat button on a CD player. And your own body acts in response to those habits with obsession and compulsion without your permission. “Habit enemies” can force you against your will to act against your right behavior.

Habits can be formed like dough in a mold. When the dough is wet and soft it is pliable like your mind. When the dough is heated in the mold, it is set and becomes solid so as with your habits being firmly set with the repetitions of your thoughts. Refuse to feed bad habits by starving them the nourishment of additional wrong actions and with the help of visualization and repeating new good habits over and over, it will add fuel to your willpower, hence your success is assured in the amount of your new found strength.

Remember environment is strong but your will power ought to be stronger to succeed in any endeavor. If you think you lack willpower, the way to develop it is by determination. “I won’t do this” or “I will do this.” Focus your will power on these simple but powerful thoughts daily. Now, I will explain to you the degrees and how willpower works and why it is so important to know how to use it properly to develop good habits. The principle of polarity explains that the difference between things seemingly diametrically opposed to each other is merely a matter of degrees of vibration; a matter of degrees of mental manifestation; two opposite poles of one thing. Let’s take willpower as an example. Concentrate your attention upon the vibration of your will power. Is it your willpower always weak or is it strong? A weak willpower is a robotic willpower. A strong willpower is a dynamic willpower. We are born with physiological willpower, which is automatic.

This automatic willpower is attached to all five senses and it can become semi-paralyzed by wrong behaviors, wrong decisions, and wrong activities. Automatic will power is the lesser degree of vibration; the lesser degree of thinking; the opposite pole of dynamic will power. But when your thinking is guided by discrimination; it revolves around a definite purpose and your purpose is worthwhile. When your actions bring about good, your will is guided by wisdom. Dynamic will power is the highest degree of vibration; the highest degree of thinking; the opposite pole of automatic will power.

Bad habits are like chunks of glass that look like precious stones, but will give disillusionment and dissatisfaction. Achievement is quickened or prolonged by your habits. I am talking about your daily mental habits that have sphere of influence over your daily life. These habits are like glue that attaches everything to it in your person, bad or good. Good habits attract advantages and bad habits attract disadvantages. When you arrive at work, for example, instead of getting down to business you say to yourself, “I need a cup of coffee before I get started and I also have a really important phone call I should make.” Habits like these are nothing but distractions. You are just wasting time that could have been well spent and you are robbing yourself from making significant sales which results in a smaller pay check and commission. It is better to get into the habit of having your coffee before work or at lunch time, and make your phone calls at lunch time. Refuse a bad habit by rejecting everything that arouses it. One bad habit I see happen continuously is leaving work early to go home when business is slow, but it could get busy the moment you leave! If this practice becomes a bad habit, just think how many sales you could lose by doing this over and over.

Keep striving until your hard work is met with success. You can be successful or not. It all depends on the quality and intensity of your thoughts and the degree of your will power. If you apply positive thinking together with dynamic will power, you will succeed. Let’s say that you do your visualizing in the morning and as soon as you finish you say to yourself, “I have probably just wasted my time seeing myself making all this money and I am pretty sure this technique is useless.” Or, “I just do not have the patience to do all of this; ‘patience is a virtue of the dead.’”

Negative thinking is the same as worrying. When you worry you are slowly killing yourself and it’s your funeral all arranged by yourself. Why die and suffer daily from worry? What ever you are experiencing in life, sorrow, ill health, poverty, someone else on this planet is suffering a thousand times more than you. Just give your worries to God and do not think yourself so ill-fated that you destroy yourself and block out the great light of God that is always trying to help you! Which shall it be victory or defeat? Therefore, if you adhere to a positive thought it will become real in form.

Good habits are the treasure troves that will bring permanent happiness. Habits are essential but we abuse their power. If you teach a parrot to talk and sing, it will duplicate what it hears over and over. If you teach it to use bad language, it will repeat profanities again and again upsetting you and others. Weak minded people can descend into bad habits effortlessly, accordingly tough- minded people can be taught to make good habits at will.

Habits can be made at will by concentration. Repetitive good habits together with positive daily affirmations can actually help you achieve wealth. The technique for destroying habits is by concentrating on the brain cells during meditation or when you are in silence. Concentrate at the third eye or the point between the eyebrows and intensely affirm that all the grooves of bad habits are being erased and destroyed. You should also be more cautious of the kind of company you keep and who you are living with. When you become more advanced spiritually you will notice you are more sensitive, sharp and energetic.

The Legend of the Dewadaru Tree

Thursday, September 29th, 2005

The Dewadaru tree is mostly found to the north of the island of Java, among the Sunda islands of Karimunjava, in the Java Sea, bearing the coordinates of Latitude 5° 52′ S, and Longitude 110° 26′ E. It has a human population of approximately 20,000 people. The Dewadaru tree had been sanctified by the local inhabitants of the island for countless generations as a result of a myth perpetuated by the elders of the society. In one of the local dialects, “daru” means “blessing from heaven,” while “dewa,” (derived from Sanskrit) is the Indonesian term for “god.” “Dewadaru” is thus interpreted as the “gift of the gods,” implying that this tree genus is a tangible symbolic gift from the gods/esses to the islanders. To the local inhabitants, the Dewadaru represents the wisdom of the gods in maintaining the harmony, stability, and peacefulness of Nature. The Dewadaru is believed to be the protective guardian of the living souls on the Karimunjava islands.

According to the legend, there was once a man living on the island of Java who was furious with his son for constant disobedience. The man, although he loved his son dearly, strove to inculcate in him a certain hard lesson. So one day he drove his son away from home with the warning that he was not to set foot on Java again.

Not willing to disobey his father again, he prepared himself for the journey. In sadness, the son left Mt. Muria where they dwelt and moved on to the open seas to the north. He sailed on a boat for many days through stormy weather and amidst huge waves, not really knowing his destination and perhaps with little will to survive. Then one day, his boat landed on the shores of a small, uninhabited island.

Meanwhile, from the peak of Mt. Muria in Java, the boy’s father was secretly watching over his son clairvoyantly. But for some reason his vision was vague and unclear, and thus lost track of the whereabouts of the boy on that island. In the old Javanese language, the word “vague” is translated as kerimun. Thus the island became known as “Karimun-java.”

The boy continued his journey inland bearing two wooden staffs as walking sticks to assist his journey. He retrieved these from the shore. These two short poles wounded him while his boat was capsized to shore by the sheer power of the waves. In the middle of the forest he poked the two staffs to the ground and started to rest from the tiresome journey. Miraculously, in that very instant the two staffs grew into magnificent trees. In awe of the incident, he named them “Dewadaru.” In the present day, the place where he rested now stands the village of Nyamplungan.

Nowadays, although not too numerous, there is a substantial amount of Dewadaru trees growing on the islands-the descendants of the very first two. The remains of the original, fabulous Dewadaru trees may still be seen. The humps are there as if to substantiate the truth of the legend. The descendants of the magickal trees grow in hill-slopes of the islands and are not easily accessible.

In proximity to the once glorious trees is a grave that until now is still being sanctified by the locals. On certain nights-such as Jumat Kliwon (a Thursday night occurring once in 35 days) of the Javanese calendar, the grave would be visited by pilgrims desiring the blessings of the spiritual adept to whom the grave belongs. The adept was known as Sunan Nyamplungan from whence the village received its name.

For centuries, the Dewadaru tree or wood is believed by the inhabitants of Karimunjava to possess magickal powers. Tested through time, the wood is said to heal poisonous bites, and aches or illnesses in the abdominal region. Dewadaru wood is often carried as an amulet for personal protection against evil persons as well as a weapon against evil spirits. It is said that unlike other types of wood, the Dewadaru, even a small piece of it, sinks when placed in water.

Seventy-five kilometers away, as the crow flies, from the town of Jepara in Java, the Karimunjava islands has a scary myth related to the Dewadaru. There is supposed to be a warning by the regional spirits that the sacred Dewadaru wood or tree is not to be taken out of the islands without the concession of the spiritual guardians of the area. Whosoever violates this, even by taking a small piece of the wood, incurs the wrath of Nature and calamity befalls him or her not long after. The usual mishap is the sinking or the immobility of the vessel that the person travels on to journey back to the mainland. Sometimes it could be a fatal illness after the trip. Often the person dies a tragic death in a freak “accident.” At first this myth was regarded as a superstition, but several instances of this have been recorded.

In regards to the sinking of unfortunate vessels transporting the wood, some observers have noted of unusual events beforehand. Signs and warnings are given from the invisible world. Tales of these spirit communications and unheeded warnings abound. One story in particular relates of an old woman appearing to the captain of a vessel warning that the boat or ship was carrying the sacred wood and that this was taken from the region without permission and the required ceremony. Before disappearing, she warned the captain to unload the illicitly gained item. The captain did not heed her request and as a result, the vessel that he commanded en route to the Java mainland sank to the watery depths. Before the ship sailed even the villagers of the island were given omens that the vessel was doomed. Many of them heard blasting sounds on the nearby Nyamplungan hill. Careful investigations revealed nothing that could have produced those noises. It is said that to this day these sounds still occur whenever a ship or a boat is destined to plunge into Davy Jones’ locker. In 1981 a mishap was prevented from occurring. There was a ship on its way to Java from the Karimunjava islands. Somewhere in the middle of the sea its engine stalled and it became immobile. Moments later everyone on board, passengers and crew, panicked. Out of the calm sea, huge waves suddenly appeared, threatening to capsize the vessel. The captain realizing what was wrong in haste called upon the passengers to throw into the sea any Dewadaru wood that they were carrying. One person confessed that he had some of the wood in his possession. This was quickly cast into the sea with apologies to the spirit guardians of Karimunjava. Amazingly, minutes later the waves subsided.

There are always two sides to a coin. The above myth also has a different aspect: if by any chance the Dewadaru wood finds its way outside of the Karimunjava islands, the wood would double its potency and act as a powerful catalyst to awaken the dormant occult faculties within its possessor or user. The energy of the wood itself is a potent amulet against all forms of black magick and it also wards off negative entities, as mentioned previously. Dewadaru is also worn as protective amulets against the jettatore, the evil eye. From the metaphysical viewpoint, the dryads or spirits of the trees are especially empowered and their power or virtues are occultly inherent within the wood. The energy of the Dewadaru wood has a beneficent influence upon the psychosomatic system of man. The village shamans say that the Dewadaru is an exclusive gift to the people on the island, one reason why the spiritual guardians of the region do not permit the wood to be exported unless with special concession.

There are numerous strange stories related to the magickal Dewadaru tree or its wood. To the local inhabitants these are no longer a matter of belief but knowledge and conviction gained from day to day experience. Being sacred, the Dewadaru is used only for devotional and protective purposes. One hardly finds the villagers using this wood for the fashioning of furniture or as a building material; and only the courageous would use it in their spiritual activities. The trees are not too numerous on the islands nowadays and therefore they are forcefully preserved. The Dewadaru is esteemed highly for their traditional and cultural value, and regarded as the totem guardians of the island. Because the occult power of the Dewadaru is well known, many disrespectful outsiders plunder the wood seeking to possess and misuse the power within it for egoic purposes. But it is also believed that Sunan Nyamplungan, the guardian of the island, or his proxy, plays a role in protecting the place from pilferers. Some say that the Adept sometimes appear as a gigantic bat to those who carry-out their negative intentions.

In 1992, the faculty of biology of the University of Gajah Mada conducted some research on the Dewadaru and the report of their analysis states that this tree is quite rare and not easily propagated. There are two strains to be found in the Karimunjava islands: the first strain is Dewadaru Baccaurea Sumatrana from the Euphorbiaceae family. The second, Fagraea Elliptica from the Loganiaceae family.

The Dewadaru is supposed to be found solely in the Karimunjava islands. Although almost unheard of, there is at least one Dewadaru tree to be found in Java in the area of Mt. Kawi in the region of Malang, East Java. Strangely enough, those living in this area sanctify the leaves rather than the wood.

Mt. Kawi is well-known for its pilgrimage site for those seeking wealth. The tree grows nearby a grave of someone who was known as Eyang Jugo, a metaphysical practitioner of royal descent. It is said that those sitting underneath the Dewadaru tree and is fortunate enough to have a leave or two fall on their heads out of their own accord, then this is a sign that great financial blessings or wealth will be bestowed upon them. It is thus not surprising to find people sitting or even spending the night ‘neath the shade of the tree hoping to catch a leaf-fall. People come from all over Java hoping to transform their fate with a simple sitting. However, even with strong winds, seldom does a leaf detach itself from the branches with the hope and expectation of the sitters. Many return to their normal lives in disappointment. At times those standing quite a distance from the tree are often blessed with a falling leaf, often blown by a non-existing wind. There are tales of those who disbelieved in the sacredness of the tree and mockingly place a leaf upon their own heads. The result was that on their way home from the mountain they encountered tragic mishaps.

The origin of the Dewadaru tree at this particular site of pilgrimage has a similar tale as the one of Karimunjava. Both were the result of the insertions of walking staffs into the grounds. According to the legend, Eyang Jugo once journeyed with a companion to his close friend R.M. Imam Soejono, who lived on Mt. Kawi. Along the way he rested in a shady area. It was there that he received intuitively from the spirit planes that his life was drawing to a close. He advised his travel companion that where he died, it was there that he was to be buried. Further along the way Eyang Jugo suddenly stabbed the ground with his staff and expired. The staff filled with the power of Eyang Jugo, suddenly grew into a tree. The Chinese people living in the precincts of Eyang Jugo’s gravesite called the tree “Shian Toho,” and this was translated into Javanese as “Dewadaru.”

As mentioned above, the Dewadaru wood is often carried as an amulet. Those able to acquire a rosary fashioned from it for spiritual or devotional purposes is indeed fortunate, for it is rare that anyone is given the permission to secure this wood from the islands and to tap into its inherent magickal virtues.

Ten Soul-Tending Principles for Women

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

Feeling restless?  Is part of you calling out for change, though you don’t yet know what that looks like, or what you most need?

Well, maybe, just maybe, you need a little soul nurturing.  Try one or more of these nurturing principles on for size:

1.) Change expands soul. When the winds of change blow storms into your life, welcome them as much as possible, for what comes will free you in some vital way and make room in your life for newness.

2.) Hope feeds soul. We can endure anything if we have hope. Without hope, we die, body first, then soul. Do not give up!

3.) Proaction moves soul. Reacting to situations and events binds you to someone else’s agenda. Choosing proactivity sets your own soul’s needs into motion.

4.) The unexpected (atemporality) enlivens soul. Unexpected events break time wide open and reveal to us the fragility of existence, yet they also refresh, revive and make more room in our lives for soul.

5.) Dreams and the unconscious (personal and collective) reveal soul. Night and day dreams reveal to you the conversation your soul whispers to you all the time. Your personal unconscious reveals to you what your soul needs but you have been denying yourself. The collective unconscious reveals to you what society needs but is afraid of acknowledging.

6.) “Wild grace” and atmosphere welcome soul. “Wild grace” is the playful part of soul that longs to be welcomed into day-to-day existence. If deliberately expressed in your surroundings, “wild grace” will create space in your outer world for the sacredness you carry within.

7.) Community connects soul. As we connect with each other on deep levels, we connect our souls - that is the kind of intimacy we are all most drawn to. The simple truth is that we need each other to survive and thrive.

8.) Balance honors soul. When we are out of balance our soul suffers; in balance our soul can feed us as our Maker intended.

9.) Boundaries protect soul. Soul can be damaged, scarred and poisoned by life if we live unconsciously. With awareness and firm boundaries, we can protect what is most precious within us and those we care about.

10.) Creativity expresses soul. Creativity is the essence of life, so if you are alive (and you appear to be!), then you are creative. There is no escaping this part of your heritage as a human being. You were created to create. Doing so sets your soul free.

Dog Days Of Summer

Wednesday, September 28th, 2005

The dog days of summer are upon us. I think that expression came from the way dogs can lounge in the summer sun. They relax as if there isn’t a care in the world. It’s easy for us to lounge as well. I often see lounging in two ways:

1) We lounge in our improvement of skill because we are so busy.
2) We lounge in our performance because we don’t work with the focus and intensity we did earlier in the year.

Let’s look at each one of these ways.

We are too busy. We have buyers and sellers coming out of our ears. We are running from morning until night. We often are out of balance with our family because we work too many hours. We are more focused on the business than we are on them. We also are behind in the improvement and developing of our skills. This focus goes out the window.

Don’t ever forget! The property sale we make today is temporary. The money we earn from it is gone shortly. The client, because we fail to follow-up long-term after the close, is gone. Statistics tell us that 80% of consumers don’t go back to their previous Agents for one simple reason. The Agents never called them again after the sale. The sale for most Agents is temporary, but the skill acquired through the follow-up process would be permanent. The ability to replicate business through the long-term connection with past clients is a skill. This skill is often never cultivated because we are too busy. We get in the dog days of summer and forget the fundamentals of sales. We don’t adhere to the details for building a long-term business.

The present pressure squeezes the skill of practicing our scripts and dialogues out of the way. It’s easy to get out of the routine and never get back on track. It’s easy to become indifferent. We tend to be indifferent to qualifying the prospects because there are so many. We also tend to be indifferent to getting price reductions from over-priced sellers. We can be very indifferent to the many steps we need to insure success. (What short cuts are you taking now that you know you shouldn’t?) It’s easy to drift along in life. We just go with the flow of the river, drifting down it because right now the river is fast moving. We can drift along for a while; get out of practice and out of shape to be able to paddle hard. The river will slow down sometime. Are we prepared for the slowdown? Will we have the conditioning to paddle hard, long, and fast when it does? The truth is, we can’t drift our way to the top in peak performance. If we talk to the most successful people they didn’t drift their way to the top!

Work intensely, then take time off. Be intense in the game and out of the game with your down time. I am 100% for time off. I am sure that for years I took more time off than many Agents. The difference was the intensity and focus when I was at work. There was no drifting at work. Are you 100% focused at work? Are you completely in the game with intensity? Think of racecar drivers. Can they drift while in the cockpit? Drifting would cost them their life. Do we have that kind of intensity of focus for a few hours a day? I would submit to you if you did, the income you earn and quality of life would radically change. There is a time to drift, but it is not at work. We all must be in the moment. Let me give you a few steps to help you be more in the moment.

1.) Establish a routine: Show up at the same time to work daily. Do the same activities at the same time. Don’t just allow the day to happen. Plan for the outcome you want. Apply yourself in your routine to create that outcome. Dr. Norman Vincent Peale said, “Plan your work then work your plan.” The routine you set will enable you to achieve success. When I started in real estate, I established that at 7:00 a.m. I would begin work. I still do that today. It is very hard for me not to be in my office at 7:00 a.m. working with intensity. What does your routine need to be? When do you need to be at work? When do you need to practice skills? When do you need family time or workout time? These all need to be in a routine.

2.) When you are not 100% focused, get there or get out. Too often Agents are half at work and half at home. We are at work thinking we have shorted our family. We are at work in body only. My advice is go home. Go home and focus 100% on your family. We have all been in this unfocused position. We feel like a piece of salt-water taffy. When they make taffy, they tug and pull it until it gets mixed and smooth. Getting pulled between work and home accomplishes nothing.

I realized many years ago that for me, Friday was a tough day to stay focused. I would have put in four focused days in a row. I truly dreaded Fridays because I was maybe at 70 – 80 % effectiveness. The difference between incredible success and mediocre performance is a couple of percentage points. I was mediocre at best. The choice to get out on Friday changed my mental attitude, my expectations, and the results. The year that I went from a 5 1/2 day workweek to a 4-day workweek, I had my largest increase in commission earned ever! Get focused or get out!

Don’t let the dog days of summer affect the outcome for your year. It’s easy to let off the gas if you got off to a great start. Don’t coast into the finish line. Make sure you are investing in your skills daily.

We all need to be better today than we were yesterday!
